But you can find them available year-round in nearly any store.

That year-round availability means that most of the apples at your grocery story have been shipped around the world and/or held in cold storage for months.

Some apples can be up to 14 months old, (or 7 in dog years).

Oh… that explains those dry, mealy apples you sometimes get!

But it doesn’t stop at apples. Other more delicate produce like lettuce, tomatoes, and spinach might already be a few weeks old by the time they hit the shelves.

In contrast, frozen vegetables go from harvest to freezer within 4 short hours. The process of flash-freezing vegetables preserves the field-fresh taste and quality right up until the point you eat them.

Fact #2: Fresh foods– not as healthy as you think?

You would think that at least fresh foods are better than frozen foods when it comes to the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in them.

Sorry to disappoint. Unless you are eating veggies straight from the farm, you aren’t getting what you paid for. Grocery store veggies can lose up to 10-75% of their vitamin C after sitting in storage for just one week!

After languishing in storage facilities, it might take a few more weeks before your fresh food makes it to the grocery store. Every passing day represents more lost nutrients. But those losses don’t stop when you bag it up and check out.

How long does that food spend in your crisper? Right. The clock is still ticking down on those nutrients.

But frozen food can be kept in your freezer much longer before losing as many nutrients.

Fact #3: Your fridge is costing you big bucks.

How many times have you filled your fridge with fresh foods with every intention to make some great meals? Then life got in the way…and a week later you ended up with a bunch of slimy bags of food?

Have you ever added up how much money you spent on each bag of rotten food you tossed in the garbage?

That wasn’t your imagination. Americans throw out more than 25% of the foods they prepare at home.

Naturally, your frozen food will be waiting patiently for you, weeks or months later. So you can have a change of plans, or eat out without wasting a dime.

That could translate to saving 25% or more on your grocery bill.

Fact #4: That steak in your freezer is slowly rotting.

Fresh meats that you buy at the store are already decaying as they sit on the shelf. But what happens when you try to keep them in the freezer for later? Doesn’t that help to preserve them?

Yes, and no. When you put fresh foods in your freezer, they become frozen very slowly– much slower than flash-freezing. This ‘slow-freeze’ creates large ice crystals that don’t do a great job at preserving the food, so your food continues to rot verrry slowly.

What’s worse– those large ice crystals act like tiny knives, puncturing the cell walls of your foods. It’s like your steak is getting chopped up from the inside.

When you thaw your food out, the result is a mushy texture. A good example of this is when you’ve tried to freeze certain fresh fruits or vegetables in your freezer. Most times, you get a runny mess when you thaw them.

How is it that flash frozen vegetables can still be tender-crisp, even after freezing, thawing, and cooking?

First, flash frozen vegetables and meats are processed at their peak, before they have any time for their cells to decay.

And second, the rapid freezing process creates much smaller, more uniform ice crystals, which don’t cut the cell walls.

Intact cell walls means you don’t end up with rotten mush for dinner.

The PTF Difference: Healthy Frozen Food Meals

We ship over 20,000 pounds of frozen food nationwide each day.
