Study: Blame Sugar & Carbs for Obesity

Posted April 23, 2025
By Sam Watts

We woke up this morning to a published medical study that did not surprise us:

Sugar and carbohydrates are the cause of obesity and diabetes.

We’ve been saying this for years.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine report1 says you should be eating protein and not worrying so much about fat to cut your risk of diabetes and other health problems.

The study’s authors, sports scientist Professor Tim Noakes and physician Dr Steve Phinney, accuse the carb-fueled food industry of using tactics “chillingly similar to those of Big Tobacco.” They said the industry’s “sabotage was achieved using a ‘corporate playbook’ of denial, doubt, confusing the public and even buying the loyalty of bent scientists, at the cost of millions of lives.”

The researchers said cutting down on carbohydrates is the single most effective approach for treating diabetes. For every 150 extra calories of sugar consumed (the amount in one can of cola), the increase in your chances for type 2 diabetes increases 11 times than if hose 150 calories were consumed by fat or protein, the authors write.

The low carb diet promoted by the experts– and by Personal Trainer Food– forces the body to burn fat as energy, a process is called ketosis.

The scientists say calorie and point counting is misleading and wrong. It is more important to focus on where the calories come from.

“Sugar calories promote fat storage and hunger,” the report states.”Fat calories induce fullness or ‘satiation’.”

“This report echoes what we’ve been teaching our clients for years,” Personal Trainer Food’s Shane Allen said.  Allen is a Personal Trainer, Sports Nutritionist and Certified Weight Management Specialist with Personal Trainer Food.

“Cut the starchy, cheap, processed carbs and sugars.  Focus on eating real meats, vegetables, eggs, cheeses and nuts and you will lose weight. You will also take meaningful steps to reverse your Type 2 Diabetes,” Allen adds.
